A stem-cell–based biomedical material—known as the Cell Bandage—has completed its initial clinical trials in the United Kingdom. The results indicate that the Cell Bandage could fundamentally transform the treatment of knee joint injuries.

For professional athletes, knee injuries are among the last things they want to face—especially severe meniscal tears, which often require surgery and lengthy rehabilitation. Yet many athletes succumb to this condition. Moreover, current surgical approaches frequently involve partial removal of the damaged tissue (meniscectomy), which can later lead to joint degeneration as a long-term complication.

Moreover, the latest results of an early-phase clinical trial published in the journal Stem Cells Translational Medicine indicate that using a patient’s own stem cells can help repair damaged meniscal tissue, restoring normal knee function without the need for surgical removal of the injured area.

This novel treatment begins by isolating stem cells from the patient’s bone marrow, culturing them in vitro for two weeks to expand their numbers, and then coating these stem cells onto a biocompatible membrane that facilitates surgical application. The research team refers to this prepared material as a “cellular dressing.” During surgery, the surgeon places the cellular dressing over the meniscal tear and sutures it in place to prevent displacement. Previous preclinical studies have demonstrated that the implanted stem cells differentiate into chondrocytes, promoting healing of the torn meniscus. Moreover, the transplanted stem cells stimulate neighboring cells to secrete proteins that aid tissue repair.

In this trial, five patients received cell‑based wound‑dressing therapy, and all of them showed excellent recovery of their menisci following implantation of the cell‑based dressing. Moreover, two years after surgery, three of the patients continued to maintain normal knee function. Professor Hollander of the University of Liverpool, who led the study, expressed great enthusiasm about the results, noting that their cell‑based dressing could offer a novel and effective treatment option for meniscal tears.

In this trial, the cell‑based wound dressing was manufactured by a cell‑therapy biotech company based in Liverpool, England, while the surgery was performed at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, England. A spokesperson for Innovate UK, the UK government agency that supports innovative industries, stated: “Turning basic stem‑cell research into clinical products that can treat patients requires close collaboration among industry, academia, and surgeons. This time, thanks to a cross‑disciplinary collaborative approach, we’ve successfully translated the cell‑based wound dressing into patient care—truly remarkable!”

Going forward, the research team aims to use extensively pre‑cultured stem cells as the cellular source for manufacturing cell‑based dressings, thereby streamlining the treatment process and reducing both surgical costs and patient burden.
